No more jeeps allowed in Yala, Wildlife Department warns
📅 Date: May 12, 2026
Colombo, Nov. 19 (Daily Mirror) - The Wildlife Department has rejected requests to add more safari jeeps to the Yala National Park fleet, citing threats to wildlife due to overcrowding.
Around 500 jeeps currently operate inside the park, and operators have requested permission to include 175 additional vehicles. Wildlife officials have advised against expansion, warning that increased vehicle activity could cause significant disturbance to animals.
Authorities noted that allowing new entrants would require reducing the number of existing operators, stressing that the park has already exceeded its sustainable capacity.
